University Liferaft Challenge!

27 January 2017

Twenty four students from the Warsash Maritime Academy and Southampton Solent University, are preparing to brave the elements and experience what every seafarer hopes they never have to do for real – spend 24 hours in a liferaft.

The challenge will take place on Friday 10 March 2017, starting at midday.  The liferafts will be secured to buoys afloat in the waters of the River Hamble.  It will be cold and wet and they will experience first hand just what it would be like if they were cast adrift with their boat sinking behind them.  Raising funds for charity as part of the Solent RAG, this adventure hopes to raise loads to give families a break from cancer.

This year’s team members include:

  • Robert Archibald
  • Greg Chalk
  • Sam Cooper
  • James Cumming
  • Daniel Cunningham
  • Mitchell Dixon
  • Marc Dodd
  • Nora Erdelyi
  • Georgios Exarchopoulos
  • George Gough
  • Elliott Hall
  • Declan Hancock
  • Tom Horlock
  • Ben Lawrence
  • Joan Lozano
  • Chinmay Natu
  • Tilekar Kunal Paresh
  • Oliver Simms
  • Laura Skutane
  • Rebecca Smith
  • Ryan Snook
  • Zachary St-John Carleton-Green

Not only is this challenge a chance to enhance their training for the Cadets, but it is also a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for those whose difficult times will last a great deal longer than 24 hours – UK families living with cancer.
