The Poker Playing Sea Dogs

04 April 2014

On 10 May, six intrepid card players are going to commence probably the soggiest game of poker ever played, as they are cast adrift in a liferaft for 24 hours. The team, who are calling themselves ‘The Poker Playing Sea Dogs’, will be tied to a buoy, so will be unable to reach dry land for the duration of their challenge.

Conditions in the liferaft will be damp, cold and probably more choppy than one would imagine, so seasickness could also play a factor. Not only is this challenge a chance to practice some extreme poker, but it is also a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for those whose difficult times will last a great deal longer than 24 hours – UK families living with cancer.

Team member Gavin Ashton explains why they are doing this:

“We are part of a group of eight (as the picture suggests!) who have been playing poker together for ten years now. We are all from the village of Kingsclere who met through our children attending the village playgroup and primary school at a similar time. Our lives have changed a huge amount over this period of time, however all of us (some closer than others) have at some point witnessed the effect of Cancer on friends, family, neighbours and others just in our small village.”

“My wife Pippa is part of the Sail 4 Cancer team that organizes respite breaks for those living and dealing with Cancer and the feedback following their time away is always very humbling. Given none of us are spring chickens or have a huge amount of time to train for anything, being cast adrift in a liferaft for 24 hours seems like our kind of challenge! We are thrilled to be able to help such a worthy cause and so would welcome any donations to help the Sail 4 Cancer team continue to help others. Many thanks, Kingsclere’s very own Poker Playing Sea Dogs”.
