Donate your boat to charity...
By donating your boat to Sail 4 Cancer, you will be directly helping families affected by cancer. Sail 4 Cancer’s boat Donation Programme also has many tax advantages and it can be a highly effective tool in managing the total value of your estate from an Inheritance Tax (IHT) perspective.
“Sail 4 Cancer have been a massive help to us. Through their extensive contacts in the marine world, they managed the whole process of selling our boat. There have been many tax benefits too and we know that many people suffering with cancer will now benefit through the activity (sailing) that we both love so much.”

If possible we will use your boat for the charity’s respite programme which provides a range of relaxing water based days out and short breaks for families living with cancer. However, this is sometimes not possible due to coding and insurance restrictions. Also, it might not be possible to use your boat in the location it is moored.
If we are unable to use your boat for our own sailing programme, we can arrange for your boat to be sold in a tax efficient manner to raise much needed funds for the charity. Sail 4 Cancer has been a pioneer of the boat donation model in the UK since 2001 and we have developed an unrivaled worldwide network of marine contacts. Irrespective of where your boat is based, we can probably help!
Sail 4 Cancer’s ‘Donate Your Boat‘ scheme can help you to quickly relinquish ownership of your vessel without you incurring any additional costs.
If the mutual decision is taken to sell the vessel to raise funds for the charity, brokerage fees can usually be waived or kept to an absolute minimum. We can also help you to freeze mooring fees whilst the boat is sold. This will help to maximise the value of your donation to Sail 4 Cancer. Any debts owed against the vessel will also be paid off.
Unfortunately, we are not able to accept all boats on to the donation programme however. Whilst we are able to accept most sizes of vessel from small keel boats to superyachts, there are certain kinds of boats which we are unable to consider. Some boats which are in a particularly bad state of repair for example cannot be considered.
There are usually two options on how to proceed. Owners can either keep possession of their boats and we arrange for our partner brokers to sell the boat. The funds are then donated to the charity after the sale. Interestingly, boats sold for the benefit of Sail 4 Cancer usually achieve far better selling prices, thereby maximising tax relief.
The alternative is for Sail 4 Cancer to take ownership of the boat and cover the associated ongoing costs (mooring, insurance etc) whilst the boat is sold. This is particularly helpful for people who are facing escalating maintenance costs or where monthly mooring or storage costs are becoming a burden. If small repairs are required to increase the value of the boat, the charity will take care of that too.
We are not able to accept all boats however; it very much depends how many boats we have on the programme at any one time. Whatever the outcome, we will work with you to achieve the very best outcome for both you and the charity
