Sun Microsystems Continues Its Support

Now in its tenth year, Sun Sail is an annual sailing event co-hosted by Sun Microsystems and its partners. Offering a day of exciting racing and an evening of fun and festivities, the event has also raised significant funds for Sail 4 Cancer since 2003.

Setting sail from the RAFYC in Hamble, participants from Sun Partners, including Morse, SCC, UKN, SAP, Q Associates, Interface, and from Sun key accounts: Tesco, BP, BT, RBS, Barclays, Vodafone, enjoyed a full day’s racing out on the Solent in excellent sailing conditions – well certainly compared to last year’s pathetic breeze!

Competitive spirits ran high throughout the day, all racing towards the coveted Sun Sail trophy. Despite certain competitive crew members attempting to sink their opponents, those who went green or accidentally inflated their life jackets, steered from the back of the boat or were too busy feeding the fishes, Morse managed to overcome all the odds and win for the 2nd year in a row! Congratulations to all the crew and Skipper for leading them to victory! Q Associates took 2nd place and 3rd was won by Clifford Chance.

Cock Up prize went to Keith Poyser for sailing at speed through the entire fleet, knocking boats aside like skittles, heading in completely the wrong direction, shouting ‘You’re going the wrong way!’

The enthusiasm during the day was equally matched in the evening’s festivities. Doubtless there were a few sore heads the following morning, but it was all in a great cause.

Lucy Ann Hillman of Sun Microsystems commented:

“I would like to say a big thank to everyone for taking part, for all their kind and generous donations to Sail for Cancer and for making it a fantastic day! With special thanks to Iain Farthing for his fantastic efforts and terrific contribution organising the Retail Armada!”

Sail 4 Cancer Trustee, Richard Groome, added:

We have an extremely long list of people to thank including Lucy Ann and Pieter Heyn of Sun Microsystems plus Mike Rimmer and Carol Brown from Rampage Events who make all this possible every year.  This event has raised an amazing £3,454, funds that will make a huge difference in our bid to help improve the quality of life for those living with cancer.”

Roll on Sun Sail 2009!
