Tim Cork Sails ‘Round The Island’ In Memory Of His Dad

03 May 2013

On the 1st of June 2013, long time Sail 4 Cancer supporter Tim Cork will sail around the Isle of Wight in this year’s Round the Island Race.

Tim will be sailing in the race in memory of his father Leslie who died of cancer in 2010.

Organised by the Island Sailing Club, the Round the Island Race is regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK.

Commening on his campaign, Tim said:

“I became aware of Sail 4 Cancer when on a sailing holiday in Turkey. I went sailing with two of the charity’s founders and was impressed with the approach the charity took. My own father had been living with cancer for some time and his health was gradually deteriorating.

Unbeknowst to me, Andy and Andy nominated my family for a respite holiday.  The mere fact that Dad had been nominated for a holiday gave him a real boost – it gave us all something to look forward to amidst hospital visits and blood test results.  It was to be our ‘final’ holiday with Dad and it gave us all valuable memories to cherish.

By Sailing 4 Cancer in this year’s Round The Island Race, I will be remembering Dad but also trying to raise funds for this great charity in the hope that other families like mine might also benefit. Cancer affects 40% of us personally so please give generously… many thanks for your support.” Tim
