Round Britain And Ireland Challenge

18 July 2007

Harry Edwards (17), Jack Haigh (17) and Archie Ward (16) have set a new World Record by becoming the youngest people to drive a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) around the coast of Britain and Ireland.  Sponsored by Evinrude Outboard Motors, the trio started their Round Britain and Ireland Challenge on Sunday 8 July at 10.30am, returning on Sunday 15 July 3pm on Sunday 15 August.

Harry, Jack and Archie began training for their record attempt back in July 2006. Between the three of them, they hold over 21 years of Power boating experience. The boys are using the challenge to raise funds for Sail 4 Cancer and what a challenge it is!  Taking in some of the UK’s most dangerous coastal waters, this will surely be a summer holiday to tell their friends about!

Archie Ward, from London commented on the Evinrude Round Britain Experience:

“Although at times it was unbelievably hard due to some difficult weather conditions, our Round Britain Challenge was an amazing experience. I’d go again tomorrow if I had the chance.”

Jack Haigh, from Isle of Wight said:

“The Challenge was tough but exhilarating. We had some scary moments but some great ones as well. The second leg from Falmouth to Cork was the hardest, with strong winds and huge waves. The third day was the most memorable experience. A family of dolphins liked swimming in the wake of the boat. It was a fantastic experience.”

Harry Edwards from London added:

“The Challenge was amazing and the best thing I have ever achieved in my life. The whole experience was memorable and I would definitely do it again. We will now look into entering next year’s Round Britain race.”

During their challenge, the lads encountered waves up to 20ft and winds of Force 5/6.  They traveled just under 2,000 nautical miles, which saw them stopover at Falmouth, Cork, Finlet, Mallaig and Stornoway, before reaching the most northerly point on their challenge, just off John O’Groats. They then travelled to Great Yarmouth en-route to the finish line at Sea View Yacht Club, Isle of Wight.

Archie, Harry and Jack completed the Evinrude Round Britain Challenge in an effort to raise funds for Sail 4 Cancer.  Everyone at Sail 4 Cancer would like to thank the boys for their incredible efforts in order to raise funds to help people affected by cancer.  If you would like to support the boys then you can donate to their campaign below.
