Phil Sharp’s Transatlantic Challenge

15 April 2008

Phil Sharp - Sail 4 CancerSail 4 Cancer Ambassador Phil Sharp is on the final countdown to his next big venture – the Figaro Transat AG2R. Although this is one of the world’s most competitive offshore racing arenas, attracting the top ocean racing talent of today, Phil is the only Briton competing in this 3,700 mile race from Concarneau, France to St Barts in the Caribbean.

Phil has teamed up with friend David Krizek, one of the Czech Republic’s top offshore sailors, in this biennial double-handed transatlantic race. Raced in 30ft Beneteau boats, the Figaro class is the only current offshore one-design class in existence that enables sailors to compete in a big fleet of identical boats. This means any advantage gained during racing is down to the sailors alone. Phil will be up against a fleet dominated by the French featuring some of the best short-hand sailors in the world.

At 26 years old, Phil is Britain’s most promising up and coming offshore yachtsman. He recently triumphed in the notorious Route du Rhum 2006 solo transat race, taking victory in Class 40 and finishing nearly a whole day ahead of his rivals. Phil is the first Britain to win his class in this event since Dame Ellen MacArthur, and he steps firmly into her shoes as the next big hope in offshore sailing. A keen supporter of Sail 4 Cancer, Phil is hoping to raise money for the charity through participating in this event. The Jersey based private trust administrator, Dominion Fiduciary Services Group (DFSG) who have signed up to sponsor Phil, have agreed to make a generous donation to the charity. However it is also possible to sponsor Phil using the secure online donation page on this website.

Thank you Phil for your ongoing support – we really appreciate it.
