Kay, Kevin And The Draig o’r Mor

18 January 2011

Since completing the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race, Kay Stibbs and her husband Kevin have been through the terrible rollercoaster experience of a cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatment.

Draig o'r Mor YachtNow set to compete in the Rolex Fastnet in August 2011, the couple are happy to put all that behind them, but want to take the opportunity to raise funds for Sail 4 Cancer who offered them a respite opportunity last summer. They feel this holiday was an important part of their cancer journey, helping them to move on as a family, to rebuild their confidence together and to begin to enjoy life again. You can read more about Kay’s experiences here.

Their boat, Draig o’r Mor (Celtic for Dragon of the Sea), a 1990 Dehler 36db, has a fantastic ocean racing history with her previous owners, and Kay & Kevin finished 13th in class with her in the Fastnet 2009, despite being “plagued by light airs”.  With a new set of sails for this year’s event, they are hoping that she will prove hard to beat, especially if there are better winds. What will spur them on most however, is knowing that any funds they raise as a result of their efforts will be used to help improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families, giving them a respite from the experiences the Stibbs family understand all too well.

The Rolex Fastnet Race

Since the first Fastnet Race in 1925, this biennial event has become legendary, over the years attracting sailing heroes such as Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, and well known public figures as diverse as Edward Heath and Simon Le Bon. It is also renowned for its difficulty and unpredictability; some years many of the boats retire – in 2007 less than a quarter actually completed the race. Storm force gales and strong currents take their toll in this race that is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
