In Memory Of Tommy Reid

27 April 2009

Tommy Reid always had a passion for sailing.  A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Tommy grew up near the water and was introduced to boating as a child. Growing up as the son of a boat builder may have been what inspired him to work on boats throughout his life. Tommy couldn’t pass up an old piece of teak, a rusty anchor, or a nautical antique to fix up because he always saw possibilities of beauty in each piece.

He served two tours in Vietnam and earned two purple hearts in combat duty. Later, he became a nationally acclaimed song writer and musician, who traveled the world entertaining for several decades. He enhanced his career by obtaining his captain’s license, traveling up and down the eastern United States seaboard as a delivery captain. Yet, Tommy much preferred the serenity of sailing, and was enthusiastic about teaching others how to sail.

Last year, he chose to return to the plantation that he grew up on. Tommy fought a brave battle with lung cancer. On April 20th, 2009 he died at the age of 67 in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was surrounded by the love of many people who adored his sweet nature. Anyone who knew Tommy knew that he was a gentle soul and a one-of-a-kind man.

Even though Sail 4 Cancer has predominantly been a UK based charity up until now, word has been spreading about our work and the impact that sailing can have in people’s recovery plan after a diagnosis. Tommy’s family felt that he would have wanted his friends to support Sail 4 Cancer in his honour.

We would like to extend our condolences to Tommy’s friends and family and we thank you for thinking of Sail 4 Cancer at this difficult time.
