£5,000 Donation to Weston Park Hospital (Sheffield)

Sail 4 Cancer has made a £5,000 grant to the Weston Park Cancer Appeal.  As its name suggests, Sail 4 Cancer aims to raise funds for cancer patients and their families and was therefore delighted to present a £5,000 donation which will be used for the following projects:

  • Food service project – Run by Sister Clare Warnock. The food study will try to improve food quality and reduce the weight loss many patients experience while undergoing treatment for cancer, the findings of which will then be shared as good practice not only in WPH but within the wider cancer network too
  • The purchase of Boluflex build-up sheets – These sheets will be used by Superintendent Radiographer Christine Cafferty and will improve the comfort and accuracy of treatment for about 90% of the over 3000 patients receiving radiotherapy each year. The new materials will go in the new build linear accelerator bunkers currently under construction.
  • Diversionary activities for in-patients – Chris Firth from the patient’s library runs a series of activities for patients who have to stay in hospital for logistical reasons. These patients may only have ten minutes of treatment a day leaving some 16 hours to fill

Richard Groome, Trustee of Sail 4 Cancer commented:

“Given that the one of the aims of Sail 4 Cancer is to provide funds for cancer treatment, care and research we are all delighted to make this grant to The Weston Park Hospital.  This grant will be used as the spring board for the development of a close partnership between Sail 4 Cancer and the Weston Park Hospital – we are currently busy planning future events such as a bicycle ride from the home of sailing (Cowes) to Sheffield, an in-ward based ‘smoothy’ drinks service and days out on the water for the patients at Weston Park.”

Bridget Evans, Director of the Weston Park Cancer Appeal, said:

“As a keen sailor myself I’m delighted to have Sail 4 Cancer onboard.  This generous donation is supporting some excellent projects in the hospital helping to improve patient care and comfort.  I hope this is the start of a very fruitful relationship.”
