£5,000 Donation To Ellen MacArthur Trust

Sail 4 Cancer, the Official Charity of Skandia Cowes Week (2003/5) has presented Ellen MacArthur with a £5,000 cheque for the Ellen MacArthur Trust, specifically to get children with cancer out on the water via the UKSA (United Kingdom Sailing Academy).

Commenting on the evening’s events, Richard Groome, Trustee of Sail 4 Cancer, said:

“Although most of Sail 4 Cancer’s work focuses on using sailing as a fundraising vehicle for cancer treatment and research, we’re equally committed to providing sailing opportunities for cancer patients and their families with the aim of improving quality of life. We’re delighted to be working with Ellen, the Ellen MacArthur Trust and the UKSA. Because there is an overlap in our Objects, specifically when getting kids out on the water, it makes sense to work together on a practical level. I have a feeling that this will be the first of many joint ventures in the future”.

Mark Turner, Trustee of the Ellen MacArthur Trust , also present on the evening, said:

“It’s great that the two charities can work together in this way, sharing a common objective of improving the lives of cancer sufferers. The donation from Sail 4 Cancer will help the Trust get more kids out on the water next year. With Nick Moloney, sailing team colleague of Ellen’s, also a patron of Sail 4 Cancer, we are excited about the growing link and collaboration between the two charities”.

This announcement was made as part of a £20,000 grant initiative by Sail 4 Cancer which mainly supports treatment and palliative care programmes; £5,000 was directed to the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal in Sheffield, £5,000 to the Macmillan Cancer Relief and £3,000 to the oncology unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
