Andy Sponges Off His Mates!

02 September 2007

Andy Bates had already planned to spend August Bank Holiday Monday raising funds for Sail 4 Cancer, but when work colleagues heard about his plans they persuaded him to have a practice run at Cable & Wireless where he works.  And so Andy found himself spending not one but TWO afternoons, in the stocks, being pelted with wet sponges, one in his work car park, the other during the Kingsclere Village Fete.

Andy, whose ultimate goal is to participate in the Rolex Middle Sea Race next month to raise funds and awareness for the charity and in memory of the cousin he lost to cancer last year, was very stoical about his double soaking. He reckoned it was great practiceSponge throwing fundraiser for the faces-full of cold sea water he will be subjected to during the Middle Sea.

Whilst it gives a whole new meaning the phrase ‘sponging off your mates’, Andy’s efforts paid off and he raised an amazing £500 from both events. This is in addition to over £900 raised to help his campaign by local Kingsclere pub, The Crown, who held a car boot sale, book sale, BBQ and a charity darts match plus several evenings of entertainment including a raffle to win day’s sailing with Andy.

The charity is extremely grateful, both to The Crown and to Andy himself. Cathy Jenkins from Sail 4 Cancer said:

“Andy is a tireless fundraiser. If he is half as good at sailing as he is at enthusing about raising money for a good cause, his competitors in the Middle Sea had better watch out! We really appreciate his commitment to the charity.”
