Riverboat Adventure Weekend for Young People

Sail 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of sailing enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Sail 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of water based days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of sport (e.g. sailing) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

Sail 4 Cancer is delighted to be working with the National Community Boats Association & River Thames Boat Project to provide adventure boating weekends for teenagers living with cancer.

These trips are for youngsters between 11 and 14 years old (we can sometimes take older guests, but NEVER younger) and they are encouraged to bring along a friend or sibling (in the same age range).

Even with a fully qualified crew, everyone will be expected to get involved with steering, locking, ropework and cooking! The youngsters eat and sleep onboard.

Who can attend?

Ideal for those who have never been on a riverboat before, those with previous experience will also find they have plenty to learn. There are no medical staff on board this trip, so we cannot take anyone requiring constant medical attention, although it is often feasible to take those with mobility restrictions if we have prior notice. This opportunity is an incredible confidence boost for all who participate - there is no time to talk about illness as there is so much going on, with the overall emphasis on teamwork, adventure - and FUN.

There is no cost for these trips apart from travel to and from the starting point. The youngsters eat and sleep on the boat.

Dates for 2017 :
11th-13th August

(NB These trips start at around teatime on Friday and finish just after lunch on Sunday)

Some of the lovely feedback from previous Riverboat Adventure Weekends

"After a year of treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia it was a fantastic opportunity to have some fun with other children who've gone through something similar. I didn't think I would ever be able to do 'normal' stuff again and to be away from all hospitals and tests was amazing! Thank you so much!" Zara (12)
