Sail 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of sailing enthusiasts in 2001, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Sail 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of water based days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of sport (e.g. sailing) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

Georgina Beken is part of a crew of nine sailors participating in one of the most gruelling offshore sailing races in the world - the Rolex Fastnet.

Panda Nova II will be one of 300 yachts sailing in this year's race which starts on Sunday the 11th of August.

The 608 mile course starts at Cowes on the Isle of Wight and heads towards the Fastnet Rock off Southwest Ireland. The fleet then head back to the finish line in Plymouth.

Message from Georgina

Panda Nova rounds the Rock

"Almost all the same crew have been racing on Panda Nova II since our first Spring Series in 2011. We've come a long way in 2.5 years, starting out at the back of the fleet and through dedication, good coaching and determination we've worked our way to some decent wins, culminating in a first place in one Winter Series race last year."

So far, our Rolex Fastnet campaign has seen us complete four qualifying races, various sea survival courses and several rescue simulations - including a helicopter rescue!

This will be my first time racing in the Fastnet and, in doing so, I am hoping to raise funds for Sail 4 Cancer. After losing my own mother to cancer in 1998, it seemed fitting to honour her in this way.

Thank you for your support."
