Polka Sailing Marathon to the Rock

Marathon to the Rock - Fastnet 2017

Sail 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of sailing enthusiasts in 2001, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Sail 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of water based days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of sport (e.g. sailing) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

Polka Sailing is once again taking a crew of experience seekers to the rock and back this August, participating in the RORC Rolex Fastnet. This once in a lifetime round trip, starting from the mecca of sailing, Cowes, is arguably one of the most gruelling amateur offshore yacht races in the world. The mixed experience crew had their first race together at the end of April, a mere quarter of the distance of the Fastnet race itself and the prospect of what they are taking on started to sink in!

Marcus Wareham, Principal and Chief Instructor of RYA Training Centre Polka Sailing said "This is a tough race even for experienced and professional crew, what these guys will go through during the race would test anyone. The team work and effort put in will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all those taking part and the crew bonding will create friends for life as their adventure unfolds. You can’t underestimate the mountain they are about to climb. It is great that they have all agreed to raise money for Sail 4 Cancer, a very worthy cause. This will undoubtedly help their motivation in the cold, wet and darkness of the Celtic Sea."
