Steffan's on the Circle LineWe've had people sailing around Britain to raise funds on several occasions, but most of us at Sail 4 Cancer didn't even know you could sail around London. However Steffan Meyric Hughes, news editor of Classic Boat is all set to prove us wrong with his latest project, which he is calling 'Circle Line' and he will raise money for us into the bargain!
He has chosen to sail a GRP Storm 15 gunter-rigged sloop on his planned route, although in reality there will be canal sections where he will have to resort to oar-power. Stefan comments: The Storm 15 is considered fleet of foot and rows very well.

| Steffan will sail from Surbiton, east along the Thames to Teddington Lock, then east along the tidal Thames to Brentford. At Brentford, he will row north on the GU canal (main branch) to Bulls Bridge, where he will take the GU Canal (Paddington Branch) to Paddington. At Paddington, he will continue along the GU Canal (Regent's Canal branch) to Limehouse, east London. From Limehouse, he will explore Bow Creek, the Bow back rivers, the Limehouse and Hackney Cuts, and the Lee Navigation River. Then he will take the tidal Thames east to the Thames Barrier or, time-permitting, the QE2 Bridge. Finally he plans to fly all the way back to Surbiton on the Thames. |

Starting and finishing in Surbiton, his circumnavigation of London will take him OVER the north circular on an aqueduct and UNDER Islington through a tunnel! He will also be sailing alongside the runway at London City Airport, using one of the oldest known methods of transport (the sail) while passenger jets thump down onto the tarmac just a hundred feet away or so. Steffan feels it will be an interesting journey through London's industrial past, meeting some interesting characters along the way.
