Sail 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of sailing enthusiasts in 2001, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Sail 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of water based days out and short-breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to UK based care institutions and support research into the positive effects of sport (e.g. sailing) and how it can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

Boot vs Boat 2014

At 12pm on Saturday 23rd August, three teams will set off from Tower Bridge in London for Brighton Pier. One team will walk and other two will sail in this unusual charity race!

On their boat, Dave Kelsall will be joining eight other sailors for the 140 mile voyage. In addition to fighting wind shifts and shifting tides, Dave's team will have to navigate through the busiest commercial lane in the world... and in the dark!

The BIG question remains unanswered though. Will the BOOTS beat the BOATS to the end of Brighton Pier?

Commenting on this challenge, Dave said:

In September 2013, completely out of the blue, I was diagnosed with an incurable Stage 4 Oesophageal Cancer and told that I might not see Christmas. I spent the Winter undergoing some pretty aggressive chemotherapy and, whilst on chemo, set myself the target of being fit enough to sail by the start of the Spring Series at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club in the North West of England. The chemo did its job and shrank the cancer by about half, giving me some extra months of life, but it left me physically and mentally exhausted. I managed to get fit enough to sail my Phantom by the last weekend of the Winter Series. I've been using sailing as an incentive to get better, as therapy to reduce stress, and to improve and maintain my fitness levels - which I will need when I inevitably go back on chemo.

Taking part in this race is high on my bucket list for the sheer enjoyment of the experience, to raise funds for this fantastic cause and, last but not least, as a celebration of the simple fact that I can do it!
