|NEWS||14th Apr 2011|
James Hardiman is an extremely busy man with companies to run and launch but he is taking some time out to compete in a major ocean race whilst raising funds for Sail 4 Cancer.
James explains: "With so many affected by this cruel disease in some shape or form, I am dedicated to making a contribution in whatever way that I can. My mother had cancer about 25 years ago, (she happily made a full recovery), and sailing is a big part of my life. Sailing has recently started to feature in my work which has creates an ideal opportunity for me to give this worthwhile charity some added publicity. The first opportunity for me to start raising funds is the Azores and Back race, the Azab, which starts on June 4th, 2011.
Although I have been sailing (on and off) for about 20 years, my ocean sailing experience is zero. I have clocked up a few thousand miles inshore/offshore and solo sailing, and recently started to compete, (with some poor results!), in some solo and dbl handed races. My inexperience of the ocean is why I feel it prudent to compete in the Azab double handed with my Father. Nevertheless it will be a steep learning curve!
I have to ensure Fluke-iGOSKi is sea worthy and complies with ISAAF offshore rules (a 64 page document). I have to cram in 3 qualification requirements, keep up with my SORC race calendar (as much as I can) and re-do a 500 mile qualifier (4-5 days of non stop sailing out of sight of land). Then get the boat to the start in Falmouth, some 200 miles away.
And all this alongside the daily running of the Company at quite a critical moment as we launch Ocean Elements, (sailing holidays in Greece) which opens to our first guests on May 1st.
I hope that you feel suitably inspired to donate and help me raise funds for this most worthwhile of charities"
